In order to mount an appropriate immune response, developmentally defined hematopoietic lineages must be able to quickly respond to an immediate stimulus. Establishing the changing gene expression patterns that are required to do this in both the context of lineage differentiation as well as the dynamic response to the cellular environment is a complex problem that involves a number of tightly regulated events. In this brief review, the role that lineage-determinant transcription factors play in establishing cellular states and functional capabilities will be explored.
