Calcium entry via voltage gated calcium channels is subject to negative feedback regulation via a calcium dependent inactivation process. The features of calcium dependent inactivation vary with calcium channel subtype and are dynamically regulated by a number of cellular processes, thus allowing different types of calcium channels to respond differentially to local and global calcium rises. A recent study by Dick and colleagues identifies an intrinsic mechanism by which L-type calcium channels can regulate their own sensitivity to elevation of intracellular calcium levels.
