Protein synthesis is known to be crucial for many processes underlying learning and memory and has been a major focus of neurobiology research for the past few decades. Initially attracting much less attention, protein degradation of synaptic molecules during memory events has recently emerged as another major molecular regulator. In light of recent works by Lee and colleagues, we here discuss the evidence for a key role of protein degradation during the retrieval of memories, with a particular focus on the ubiquitin-proteasome system.
